SUMMARY:If Music Be the Food of Love
DESCRIPTION:2:00pm\n  \nProduced by \nThe Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra\nSunday Chamber 2\n  \n“If music be the food of love\, play on! Give me excess of it!” \nAs part of our Mid-Winter Music Festival exploring the musical muse that is Shakespeare\, the SSO Chamber Players brings you an afternoon of music inspired by the Bard. \nBeethoven was a fervent lover of Shakespeare’s works\, and in his String Quartet Op. 18 No. 1\, he captures Juliet’s tomb scene in the stunning second movement. Saskatchewan composer Elizabeth Raum wrote incidental music for a production of King Lear\, and when the production closed she created a suite of the music for wind quintet\, the King Lear Fantasy. These pieces and much more—even a few surprise guests—as we explore the food of love! \n\nThe SSO’s Sunday Chamber Series is moving across the river to historic Convocation Hall. Street parking and some parking lots are free on campus on Sundays.  We encourage all concert goers to bring their favourite coffee in a travel mug. \nlink to The Saskatoon Symphony \n  \nTicket Information\nAdult: $30 \nStudents/Senior $20 \nFor wheelchair seating call The Symphony office at 306-665-6414 \n

SUMMARY:Music of World War One
DESCRIPTION:2:00pm\n  \nProduced by \nThe Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra\nSunday Chamber 1\n  \nTo mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War\, the SSO is exploring the music that came from a generation of composers who were forever impacted by their experiences and losses. \nJan van Gilse’s Nonet (1916) was written at a time when he had to leave Germany for his native Netherlands due to the increasing tension of the war. Englishman Frank Bridge was deeply disturbed by the war. His music during that time\, including 2 Old English Songs for String Quartet (1916)\, showed a deep searching for the pastoral and spiritual consolation. German composer Paul Hindemith was conscripted in 1917 and joined his regiment in January of 1918. Forever shaped by his experiences in the war\, Hindemith’s Kammermusik No. 2 (1922) shows his growth as a young composer post-war.
