ANCIENT ELEMENTS is a performance combining wearable art, original poetry, live flamenco-gypsy music and flamenco dance based on the Ancient Greek Elements of Fire, Earth, Air, and Water. The concept began with swaths of silk, hand-dyed by Saskatoon artist Lindsay Embree using natural indigo and ecological dye processes. Fashion designers Astri Prugger of Montreal and Melissa Squire of Saskatoon used this fabric to create four flamenco dresses inspired by each of the Ancient Elements. These one-of-a-kind works of wearable art are featured in a dazzling performance of original poetry, music and dance.
This performance is a fundraiser for the Jack Millkin Centre, an arts and cultural space nestled in Saskatchewan’s boreal forest at Ness Creek.
Performers
The musical director for ANCIENT ELEMENTS is Celedonio Garrido Santos of Seville, Spain. The flamenco musicians are Celedonio on vocals, Ricardo Diaz from San Francisco on guitar, and Saskatoon musicians Anna Bekolay on violin, Nicholas Horlick on percussion and Daniel Regnier on oud and keyboards. The dancer-choreographers are Victoria Beaudin, Lina Kazan, and Colleen Kastning, all from Saskatoon, and Maria Regnier from Calgary. Each dancer-choreographer has worked with the musicians to create an original flamenco dance piece based on each dancer’s ancient element. Original poems by Saskatoon poet Ryan Bradshaw are interspersed throughout the show.
