Sunday Chamber 1
To mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War, the SSO is exploring the music that came from a generation of composers who were forever impacted by their experiences and losses.
Jan van Gilse’s Nonet (1916) was written at a time when he had to leave Germany for his native Netherlands due to the increasing tension of the war. Englishman Frank Bridge was deeply disturbed by the war. His music during that time, including 2 Old English Songs for String Quartet (1916), showed a deep searching for the pastoral and spiritual consolation. German composer Paul Hindemith was conscripted in 1917 and joined his regiment in January of 1918. Forever shaped by his experiences in the war, Hindemith’s Kammermusik No. 2 (1922) shows his growth as a young composer post-war.
The SSO’s Sunday Chamber Series is moving across the river to historic Convocation Hall. Street parking and some parking lots are free on campus on Sundays. We encourage all concert goers to bring their favourite coffee in a travel mug.
