Album Release Concert Falynn Baptiste with guest Gabe Penna
Event Navigation
Making her debut performance with songs from her first solo album, Cree singer/songwriter Falynn Baptiste will be joined by Gabe Penna for an evening of songs that tell stories of connection and belonging. Baptiste’s new album titled “Home” is a collection of contemporary folk music written in both Cree and English. Baptiste, who was raised by first language Cree speakers, released a contemporary Christmas album with all songs translated and sung in the Cree language titled “A Cree Christmas” in 2020. “I wanted to take a language that was perhaps unfamiliar to many (both Indigenous and non-Indigenous alike) and create an opportunity to connect with the language; and in doing so create a sense of wonder and curiosity.” Baptiste will be accompanied by composer and pianist, Jo Carter and guitarist Lance Whitecalf.
Gabe Penna first came on the scene with his debut album “Coffee Cup” in 2005. Since then, he has performed across the province and released 3 more discs of music with his Band “Gabe Penna & The Rising”. Growing up with 60s and 70s Folk influences, he is often vocally compared to Cat Stevens, with the lyrics of Bruce Cockburn. Gabe approaches his performing and song writing with a desire to encourage the listener in their journey by touching on the themes of being free to be oneselves, to love unconditionally and to know all will be well. It is obvious his music serves the same purpose in his life.
