The 5th Show of the Live Five 21st Season
By Yulissa Campos
Presented by Ay, Caramba! Theatre
Directed by Peace Akintade
The Newcomer is a story about resilience. While in Uganda, Juma and his family lived in a refugee camp for twelve years. When he was seventeen, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) recruited him and his family to live in Saskatoon. Here, he had to overcome many obstacles to achieve one of his biggest dreams: attending university.
This comedic coming-of-age story delves into the struggles many young, new Canadians face when first arriving.
The Newcomer premiered at the 2021 Saskatoon Fringe Festival, receiving a 4.5/5 star review from the Saskatoon StarPhoenix.
